Smart access control - Environmental resistance

Resistance to external environmental conditions and highlights for the installation of Homismart's smart access controls.

General background and explanation of terms

When we plan the Homismart's products, we are required to understand the correct locations for installations while meeting the requirements of international standards, so that the products developed by Homismart will meet the installation conditions and serve our customers for many years.

The international standard defines parameters according to which the products should stand and function over time. In this article, we will review aspects related to the products' resistance to environmental conditions, with an emphasis on resistance to water, dust, direct sunlight, etc.

What is water resistance?

There is a difference between being waterproof and water resistant. So does the standard, waterproof means that something is impervious to water regardless of how long it is submerged, and water resistant means that a product can stop water getting into it to some extent, but not completely.

What are the components of Ip digits and the relationship to Homismart's smart control system?

IP is the name of the standard formulated by the International Electrical Commission (IEC), to determine how resistant an electrical device is to fresh water and common raw materials - such as dirt, dust and sand.

The first digit after the IP - is actually the rating that the standard assigned to the unit in order to define its level of resistance to solids. With reference to HomeSmart's access controls, some of which were designed to be resistant to outdoor environments, it is the initial number six - which means that "harmful" dust or dirt has not permeated the unit after being in direct contact with the dirt for eight hours.

The first digit distinguishes the standard definitions between several cases:

Solid protection - first digit in the IP code.

1 Protection against contact with any large body surface.

2 Protection against fingers or similar objects.

3 Protection against tools, thick wires or similar objects.

4 Protection from most wires, screws or similar objects.

5 Partial protection against contact with harmful dust.

6 Protection against contact with harmful dust.

The next (second) digit normally distinguishes between the water resistance levels/rating. There are several ratings - for example, in rating seven, this means that the device can be immersed in a meter of fresh water for half an hour, and in rating 8 to 1.5 meters for half an hour.

The second digit refers to the device's resistance to water - the second digit in the IP code:

1 Protection against vertically dripping water.

2 Protection against vertical dripping of water when tilting the device at an angle of up to 15 degrees.

3 Protection against direct spraying of water when tilting the device at an angle of up to 60 degrees.

4 Protection against sprays and splashing water in all directions.

5 Protection against low pressure water projected from a nozzle with a 6.3 mm diameter opening in any direction.

6 Protection against water irradiated with powerful jets from a nozzle with a 12.5 mm diameter opening in each direction.

7 Protected against immersion in water up to a meter (or 3.3 feet) deep for up to 30 minutes.

8 Protected against immersion in water at a depth of more than a meter (the manufacturer must specify an exact depth).

What is the resistance of homismart's smart access controls?

the answer for that depends on the type of the access control and the way it's installed. Homismart has access controls adapted to the environment of offices/houses where there is a roof and installations in internal spaces and next to them there are access controls adapted to an outdoor environment.

HomiSmart's smart access controls include touch screens and internal backup batteries. There are several topics that are important for installers to pay attention to when we conduct pre-installation training at our company and are actually ip65 compliant.

Homismart's smart external access controls are highly water resistant from all sides, given that there is an installation with protection against sun and rain at high intensities and given that there are installation angles that prevent the accumulation of liquids on the controls.

What is the recommended installation for the project / building / entrance to my parking lot?

The answer to this question is a bit complicated and requires technical knowledge with Preliminary tour of the pre-installation site. Training on the correct installation method is provided to every authorized installer. The regular trainings that the projects department at Homismart delivers are so that the result will be smart access control that serves the customers for many years. What is important to carry out when planning an installation in an outdoor environment is protection with a protective column that protects against heavy rains and direct sunlight, with reference to the directions of the sun during the operating hours and the temperatures on the site throughout all seasons of the year. In places where direct rain is expected on the touch screens of the controls, they should be installed with metal enclosure  and add a slight angle so that water does not accumulate on the touch screen in vertical installations.

What Is the ideal solution when we plan where to locate access controls?

Whereas HomiSmart's smart controls allow video calls with The tenants/companies, we strongly recommend to integrate an external roof over the location that will protect against sun, rain and protect the visitors so that they can talk with the tenants even when it is raining outside or when there is direct summer sun at noon. If you combine such a solution, then there is a complete answer to both the functional/technical requirements of durability and an equally important answer that takes into account the various visitors who come to the complex and wait for the opening of the door/gate after the tenant talks with them.
